Lynneice Washington is District Attorney, Jefferson County (Bessemer Cut Off). She was also elected in 2016 and is the first African American woman elected District Attorney in Alabama.

Although Lynneice Washington did not grow up with a silver spoon in her mouth, she was blessed to be raised in an ideal home – with the steadfast love, and unconditional support of her parents. Her home life was structured and much was expected of her. She learned responsibility, discipline, and self control at an early age. When she was born, her family was living in the ACIPCO area. Later her family moved to Norwood and then East Thomas. She attended A.H. Parker High School, Auburn University – Montgomery with a bachelors in criminal justice and corrections, and Miles Law School, where she obtained her JD.

She began her career as a solo practitioner and after six years became assistant DA of the Bessemer Cut-Off District of Jefferson County for 8 years and then returned to private practice. In 2013 she became a hearing officer for the Jefferson County Personnel Board and then an appellate prosecutor for the Irondale Municipal Court. Most recently she was presiding judge of Bessemer Municipal Court. While running for the District Judge in 2016, she found out she had cancer. At the time her husband was serving in Iraq. She turned down his offer to come home, preferring to rely on her inner strength and faced her challenge privately, not revealing to the public while she was campaigning for office that she was undergoing chemotherapy. Her community involvement is extensive, and includes, among many others, Bessemer Rotary Club; Girls, Inc.; Domestic Violence Task Force, Bessemer; Children’s Hospital Committee for the Future; Brenda Brown’s Bosom Buddies Cancer Awareness program; NAACP’s Wonderful Outstanding Women award; Woman of Achievement, Bessemer Business and Professional Women’s Club; A.G. Gaston Boys and Girls Club’s Pillar of Character Excellence Award: Fairness Award; and Rotarian of the Year, Bessemer Rotary Club.
