Laura Murphey began painting professionally in 2009. She began private instruction in oil painting while studying art in high school in Huntsville, Alabama. After learning classic oil painting techniques, in college she was introduced to abstract art. She took foundation art classes at the University of Tennessee but switched majors and graduated with a degree in finance. She worked in finance for 8 years until she retired to raise a family. She then began taking art lessons again, studying drawing, drafting, perspective, watercolor, oil, color theory, botanical illustration, techniques of the Old Masters, impasto techniques, plein air painting, and more. She worked briefly as an architectural illustrator and continues to enjoy drawing and painting architecture. She is currently studying painting and art history at Kennesaw State University.

Laura is exploring the world of contemporary art and trying to find her own authentic expression. She is currently experimenting with realism and expressionism and contemplating the content in her own life. She attempts to inject her work with subtle irony, juxtaposition, appropriation, and metaphor. She seeks to draw her viewers in with attention to subtle details, both in technique and content. Her Southern heritage reveals itself in a Neoclassical influence and a respect for history and provides a wealth of painting inspiration. Her goal is for every painting experience to make her a more enlightened painter and person.
